Night Prayer
A heartfelt night prayer to guide your spirit and strengthen your faith.
A Short Prayer
Lord, the day is done. I bring it to You — all of it: the good moments, the failures, the worries I carried that were never mine to carry. Take it all. Grant me the gift of rest. Watch over those I love through the night. I wake or sleep in Your hands. Amen.
Extended Prayer
Father, the day is ending.
I bring it to You now — not polished or curated, but as it actually was. There were moments I am grateful for. There were moments I am not proud of. There were conversations I wish I could have differently. There were graces I almost missed.
I confess the sins of today — the impatience, the distraction, the words spoken carelessly, the kindness withheld. Wash them clean. Let me sleep without the weight of guilt that You have already removed.
I release the worries of today. Some of them are real problems I will face again tomorrow — but they do not need to be faced tonight. You are the God who neither slumbers nor sleeps. You are on watch. The matters that weigh on me are lighter in Your hands. I place them there now.
I thank You for what was good today — the small mercies I may have rushed past: food, breath, a moment of beauty, a kindness from a stranger, another day of life. These are not small. They are signs of Your faithfulness.
Watch over those I love through these hours. Guard their rest. Protect them in their sleeping. Bring morning to each of us renewed.
And as I close my eyes tonight, let my last conscious thoughts be of You — not the day's regrets, not tomorrow's anxieties, but Your face. Your faithfulness. Your nearness.
I rest in You. Amen.
Understanding
The Christian tradition of evening prayer is ancient — it is called Compline (the final hour). It acknowledges that the day is done, that God is on watch, and that rest is an act of trust. We sleep because we believe God does not need to.
The Prayer Session
Review the day with gratitude
Before you pray, mentally walk through the day. Name three things — even small ones — that you are grateful for. This is called the Examen, a practice with deep roots in Christian tradition.
Confess and release
Night is a natural time for honest confession. Name what went wrong today — not to punish yourself, but to clear the slate. Receive God's forgiveness and let the day end clean.
Give tomorrow's worries to God tonight
If your mind races at night with tomorrow's concerns, write them down and hand them over. Say aloud: 'Lord, I give You [specific worry]. I trust You with it through the night.'
Pray a Scripture over your sleep
Psalm 4:8 — 'In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.' Memorize it and pray it as you close your eyes. Let it be the last thing on your lips.
Short Version
Lord, the day is done. I bring it to You — all of it. Take the weight. Grant me rest. Watch over those I love. I wake or sleep in Your hands. Amen.
